New Year Resolutions: Old Year Appreciations

With this being my first blog, I'm up for constructive criticism to frame new and better ideas so feel free to comment when your finish reading.

“The best is yet to come."– William Shakespeare

Or has it happened already?

With Serenity Motivated being a 2017 goal of mine, I saw it quite ideal to write about New Year Resolutions.

Now its six days into the New Year and I have already cried a few times, felt disappointed, vented in several ways, hurt others unintentionally, and forgot to be understanding.

Most persons would then conclude that my 2017 has been utterly ruined due to its negative start out. Why? Because we normally make these resolutions of peace, happiness, becoming a better person, falling in love, and all together just really attaining self-actualization. However, we often forget to start the new year being real; being real with what we have and who we are. Not because we make resolutions means these changes happen overnight when the clock strikes 12. Realistically we are no Cinderella or Prince Charming, and even though we probably had kissed a “prince” or "princess" at midnight, he or she is not necessarily here to save a lad or damsel in distress.

The fact is there will be no major change between 2016 and 2017; everything will be gradual. Therefore, should have either started prior to 2017 or will begin to be a steady life long process with the start of the new year. Hence, the regular “2017 will be my year” is no longer applicable. This is for the reason that your 2016 was probably your year and so will 2018 be as well; you just did not recognize it. Every year is dynamic and makes a powerful impact in your life; it’s for you to analyse those years and see the positive impacts those years made. No year is entirely bad and no year is entirely good.

So if you think so far that 2017 did not start out as planned, there’s 359 days multiplied by an extra 20 years to make things right, with everyday being one step closer to becoming your best self.

Remember you are serenity, only you can take away your bad days.

Short and to the point, but here are a few pointers to take into consideration when making “resolutions”:

  1. Be real with yourself; understand who you are and what you’re capable of doing.

  2. Make them specific; this way it’s easier to tell if you’re making progress.

  3. Take something from the previous year that you liked and improve on it; remember change is gradual.
